The Ministry of SMEs and Startups (Minister LEE Young) recently announced that Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has accepted the Ministry's invitation to visit Korea. OpenAI has recently captured the attention of the world with the release of ChatGPT, a generative AI service. OpenAI and Korean startups will hold a meeting on the morning of Friday, June 9.

* Detailed plans for the meeting will be announced in the future

This invitation aims to enhance Korea's AI competitiveness and foster the growth of AI-related startups by promoting exchanges between OpenAI, a world-leading company in the AI field, and domestic startups.

The Ministry of SMEs and Startups plans to hold a dialogue between Minister LEE Young and Sam Altman, and also will provide an opportunity for domestic startups to ask questions they may have about OpenAI.

Startups interested in participating in the meeting can apply through the K-startup website (www.k-startup.go.kr) from Wednesday, May 31 to Friday, June 2. After reviewing the technical relevance and other factors to ensure smooth event proceedings, about 100 companies will be selected.

In addition to the meeting with the MSS, members of the general public, including developers, entrepreneurs, and academics who are interested in OpenAI’s artificial intelligence technologies, including ChatGPT, can apply to attend the “Conversation with Sam Altman” event, which is being jointly organised by OpenAI and SoftBank Ventures, and sponsored by the MSS. Applications to attend will be open starting noon on Wednesday, May 31, and should be submitted through the event website (www.openaiseoultour2023.com).

Minister LEE stated, “The recent advancements in AI technology are a revolution, and are driving tremendous changes across the fields of economy, industry, society, and culture, providing our startups with new opportunities.” She added, “With this event, we plan to explore potential collaborations with OpenAI, with the aim of providing domestic startups with new growth opportunities.”
